Pure Fiji MAN, explained: what is in it and who it suits

Most men's skincare is sold on the idea that you are doing something wrong. Pure Fiji MAN is a three product range that does not really work that way. It is a wash, a lotion and an oil, all built on the same four cold pressed oils, and the whole point is that it is short enough to actually get used.

Here is what is in it, how it is meant to be used, and who it does and does not suit. We stock the range at our Parnell studio and on this site, so this is written from having the bottles in front of us rather than from a press release.

The four oils that run through the whole range

Every product in the MAN range is built on the same base: cold pressed virgin coconut oil, together with dilo, macadamia and sikeci seed oils. Pure Fiji press these in Fiji, which is the reason the range exists at all and the reason it smells the way it does. The scent across the range is citrus lime and mint. It is noticeable without being heavy, and it is nothing like the aquatic smell that most men's grooming defaults to.

Beyond the shared oil base, each product adds one or two things of its own. That is genuinely the whole formulation story, which is refreshing in a category that usually buries a simple product under a long list.

The Hair Face and Body Wash

A three in one cleanser, 280ml, $42. The cleansers are plant derived, drawn from sugar cane, and the four oils sit underneath them. It also carries panthenol and wheat protein, plus passionflower.

The practical case for it is the shelf. If the shower currently holds a shampoo, a body wash and whatever half empty bottle is behind them, this replaces all three. That is the reason a three in one sells, and it is a better reason than most.

The Hydrating Body Lotion

280ml, $49, and the one product in the range we would call the standout. It is the same four oils plus hyaluronic acid, and it is made for face as well as body, which means it can be the only moisturiser someone owns.

It absorbs quickly and does not leave a film, which matters more than it sounds. The single most common reason a man abandons a moisturiser is that it feels greasy and he has to wait around before getting dressed. This one does not have that problem.

The Nourishing Body Oil

90ml, $25, and the least essential of the three, which is not a criticism. It is the same oil base without the lotion's emulsion, so it is more concentrated and goes further. A few drops warmed between the hands is the whole instruction.

If someone is not going to use three products, this is the one to leave out. If they are the sort of person who already uses a beard oil or a face oil, it is the one they will like most.

How the range is actually meant to be used

Wash in the shower. Lotion on afterwards while the skin is still slightly damp, on the face as well if he will. Oil instead of the lotion on the days when skin feels tight, or on top of it in winter.

That is it. There is no order to memorise and nothing has to be layered in a particular sequence. A routine that takes two minutes is a routine that survives past February.

Who it suits, and who it does not

It suits someone who does not currently use anything and is not going to tolerate a complicated routine. It suits someone who works outside or with their hands, where skin gets dried out by the job rather than by anything to do with their face. It suits gifting, because there is nothing in it that implies the recipient has a problem.

It is not the right thing for someone with a specific concern they are already working on. If a man has been prescribed something for his skin, or he is dealing with persistent acne or a condition he has seen someone about, a general purpose range is not the answer and we would say so at the counter. Nut oils also mean it is worth a look at the ingredient list if there is a nut allergy in the picture.
