Hard Water and Your Skin: Does It Really Make a Difference?
Share
If your skin feels tight or dry after washing, the water itself can be a small piece of the puzzle. Researchers have looked closely at hard water and skin.
What the research found
A study examined how water hardness affects the skin after washing. It found that hard water, which is high in minerals like calcium, can leave more surfactant, essentially cleanser residue, on the skin, and that this was linked to greater skin barrier impairment and irritation, a finding especially relevant for people with atopic dermatitis (Danby et al., 2018, PMID 28927888).
What this means in practice
Hard water is not a disaster, and most people are fine. But if your skin is dry or sensitive, a few small changes help.
- Use a gentle cleanser and only as much as you need, then rinse thoroughly.
- Moisturise soon after washing to comfort the barrier.
- Keep water warm rather than hot, which is less stripping.
