Medik8 Crystal Retinal 3 30ml

Medik8 in New Zealand: where to start and where to buy

Medik8 is one of the brands people ask us about by name. Usually they have read something about retinal, or they have seen the numbered bottles and cannot work out which one is meant for them. This is the guide we would give you across the counter at Parnell.

What Medik8 actually is

Medik8 is a British skincare brand, and the useful thing about it is that the whole range is built on one order of operations. The brand calls it CSA: vitamin C and sunscreen in the morning, vitamin A at night. Three steps, repeated. Everything else sits around that spine as support.

That structure is why it suits people who want a routine they can keep up rather than a shelf of unrelated bottles. If you like knowing what each thing in your bathroom is for, you will get on with it. If you want one product that does everything in ninety seconds, this is probably not your brand, and we would rather say so now than after you have bought three of them.

Where to start if you have never used it

Start with the step you are currently missing, not with the most interesting bottle.

For most people in Auckland, that step is the morning one. New Zealand has an unusually high UV index, which is what makes daily sun protection so worth doing here. Advanced Day Ultimate Protect is the protect half of the morning in the Medik8 range. Read the SPF rating and the directions on the product page before you buy, because how much you use and how often you reapply matters as much as which bottle you pick. If you want the reasoning behind the sun part, we have written about UV protection through a New Zealand summer.

The other half of the morning is vitamin C. Medik8's C-Tetra is the brand's oil soluble vitamin C line, built on tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate rather than the more familiar L-ascorbic acid. Which of the two suits you comes down to preference and skin type, and we go through it properly here: L-ascorbic acid and THD ascorbate, side by side.

Only once the morning is steady would we add the A. Doing all three at once means that if something does not agree with you, you will have no idea which product caused it.

Which Crystal Retinal number

Crystal Retinal is the brand's retinaldehyde line, and it comes in escalating strengths numbered 1, 3, 6, 10 and 20. The numbers are a ladder, not a ranking. Starting high does not get you there faster. In our experience the people who start high are the ones who stop.

Crystal Retinal 3 is where we point most people who are new to vitamin A but not especially reactive. Two nights a week for a fortnight, then three, and build from there if your skin stays comfortable. If your skin flushes easily or you have had a bad experience with actives before, start at Crystal Retinal 1 instead and take longer over it. Move up a number only when the one you are on feels like nothing.

Retinaldehyde is worth understanding before you buy, because it is what separates this line from a retinol. It converts to retinoic acid in one step, where retinol takes two. What that does and does not mean in practice is covered in retinaldehyde and retinol, the science.

Finding yourself in the range

We stock the Medik8 range broadly, and it is far more products than anyone needs to read through. Here is the shorter way in.

If your skin feels tight, dry or generally unhappy

Sort comfort out before you sort anything else out. Skin that already feels stripped is not a good starting point for vitamin A, and if you push on anyway you will end up blaming the retinal. Hydr8 B5 is the hydrating serum in the range and it layers under a moisturiser without much fuss. It is also what we suggest keeping on hand for the nights when a retinal leaves your skin feeling papery.

If the appearance of lines and loss of firmness is what bothers you

The A step is where most of that conversation goes, and patience is most of the rest. If you cannot use vitamin A, or you want something to sit alongside it, Liquid Peptides is the peptide serum in the range and a straightforward morning layer.

If texture and dullness bother you most

This is where a toning step earns its place. Press & Glow is the daily one, and there is a refill once you are through the first bottle. One caution: bring it in on its own rather than in the same week you start a retinal, and if you are already using Crystal Retinal several nights a week, use the toner in the morning or on your off nights. One new thing at a time is how you find out what your skin actually thinks.

If you just want to look after your skin sensibly

Then the three CSA steps are the whole answer and you can stop reading. Adding more products is not the same as getting better results.

Buying Medik8 in New Zealand

You can buy it from us in person at 245 Parnell Road, Parnell, or order online at verdocosmetics.com. Shipping is charged at checkout and works out on where you are in the country.

Coming in is worth it the first time, particularly if you are choosing a retinal strength. Five minutes talking about how your skin actually behaves beats reading twenty product pages.

What an authorised stockist means, and why it matters

Verdo is an authorised Medik8 stockist. That is not a marketing badge, it is a supply chain fact, and it has practical consequences.

  • Our stock comes through the brand's official channel, so we know where it came from and how old it is. If you want to check a batch or a date before you buy, ask and we will look for you.
  • It is stored and shipped the way the brand asks us to. Vitamin A and vitamin C formulas are the ones we are most careful with, because heat and light are not kind to them.
  • If something is wrong with a product, we can take it back to the distributor for you. That is the part people only discover they needed at the worst moment.

The alternative is grey import: genuine product bought outside the official channel and resold, often through a marketplace listing with no named retailer behind it. It is not automatically bad stock. The problem is that you cannot check. You do not know the batch, how old it is, or how it has been stored, and if something is wrong there is often no one to go back to. If a seller will not tell you who they are, that is worth paying attention to.

Honest notes before you buy

Vitamin A takes time. Weeks, not days. If you want a visible difference by Friday you will be disappointed, and no strength number changes that.

The first fortnight can be unglamorous. Some people find their skin looks flaky or feels dry when they start a retinal. Going slower is the fix. Going harder is not.

The night step is only half of it. There is not much point paying for the A step and skipping daily sun protection, and with the UV index we get here that is truer than in most places.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, speak to your doctor or midwife before using any vitamin A product. We are not the right people to advise on that.

If you are under a dermatologist or on prescription skincare, check with them before adding actives. Doubling up on two strong routines is a common and avoidable mistake.

If your skin is currently irritated, wait until it has settled. Nothing in this range is a good idea on skin that is already unhappy.

If you are not sure where you sit in any of this, come in and ask. Bring a photo of what you are using now, or bring the products themselves. We would rather talk you out of something than sell you the wrong thing.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I buy Medik8 in New Zealand?
From an authorised stockist. Verdo Cosmetics is one, at 245 Parnell Road in Parnell, Auckland, and online at verdocosmetics.com, with shipping charged at checkout. Buying through the official channel means we know where the stock came from and how it has been stored, and if something is wrong with a product we can take it back to the distributor for you. With a marketplace listing that does not name the retailer, you have no way to check any of that.
Which Crystal Retinal strength should I start with?
Crystal Retinal comes in 1, 3, 6, 10 and 20. Most people who are new to vitamin A but not especially reactive start on Crystal Retinal 3, two nights a week, and build up as their skin gets comfortable. If your skin flushes easily or you have reacted to actives before, start at 1. The numbers are a ladder to climb slowly, not a measure of how serious you are, and there is nothing to gain from starting higher than your skin can handle.
Is retinal different from retinol?
Yes. Crystal Retinal uses retinaldehyde, which converts to retinoic acid in one step, where retinol takes two. That is the difference between the two forms. It does not mean retinal suits everyone better, and it does not remove the need to introduce it gradually. We have written a longer piece comparing the two if you want the detail before you buy.
Do I need the whole CSA routine, or can I just buy the retinal?
You can buy just the retinal, but we would rather you bought the morning steps first. New Zealand has an unusually high UV index, so daily sun protection is the step that matters most here. There is not much sense in paying for a night step and skipping the day one. If budget means choosing, choose the morning.
