Can You Over-Exfoliate? Signs, and How to Recover
Share
Exfoliating acids and scrubs can leave skin smoother and brighter, but overdoing them is a common mistake. Here is how to keep the balance.
Why more is not better
Your skin barrier is what holds moisture in and keeps irritants out. Reviews of skin barrier science describe how the barrier depends on an intact outer layer and its lipids, and how disrupting it leads to dryness, sensitivity and increased water loss (Rajkumar et al., 2023, PMID 37717558). Over-exfoliating, whether with acids, scrubs or too many actives at once, can wear that barrier down.
Signs you may be over-exfoliating
- Tightness, stinging or a burning feeling when applying products.
- Unusual redness, flaking or a shiny, over-tight look.
- Skin that suddenly reacts to products it used to tolerate.
How to recover
- Pause exfoliating acids and scrubs for a while.
- Focus on gentle cleansing, hydration and a comfortable moisturiser.
- Reintroduce exfoliation slowly once skin feels settled, a couple of times a week at most.
At Verdo we stock the gentle Medik8 Press & Glow exfoliating toner and the Medik8 Total Moisture cream to support recovery.
