Red Light and Ageing Skin: What the Trials Actually Found

Red light is the wavelength most often sold for ageing skin. There is real trial evidence behind it, and it is more modest than the before-and-after photos suggest.

The controlled trial people cite

A controlled trial published in Photomedicine and Laser Surgery in 2014 treated 113 people with red and near-infrared light and measured skin roughness and collagen density against an untreated control group, reporting improvements in both (Wunsch, 2014). It is the study most often referenced, and it is worth noting it was a manufacturer-linked trial, which is common in this field and worth knowing when you read the numbers.

Home devices specifically

A 2020 study in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology looked at a home-use LED device at 637nm and 854nm for facial rejuvenation (Ng, 2020). A 2021 study in the Journal of Clinical Medicine examined an LED device used on the neck, and reported on safety alongside appearance (Lee, 2021). A placebo-controlled split-face trial gives a useful design, because each participant acts as their own control (Nikolis, 2016).

How to read all this

The second part of the 2024 JAAD review is the fairest summary of where dermatology considers the evidence to sit across applications (Mineroff, 2024). The pattern across studies is consistent, modest, and measured over months rather than days. Nobody in the literature is reporting the transformation a marketing image implies.

If you want one honest expectation: this is a maintenance habit, not a procedure. It belongs alongside sunscreen and a retinoid, not instead of them.

How long before there is anything to see?
The trials that report changes measure them over weeks to months of regular use, not days. A 2014 controlled trial ran treatments twice weekly over 15 sessions before measuring (Wunsch and Matuschka, PMID 24286286).
Is a home device as good as a clinic one?
Generally home devices are lower powered. There is published work on home-use LED devices specifically, but a home device and a clinic device are not interchangeable and should not be assumed to give the same result.
Can I use it with retinol or vitamin C?
