Mineral makeup for mature skin: what the evidence actually shows

The short version

  • Powder settles into lines mostly when too much goes on. No study has measured that on mature skin, so this part is our inference.
  • The SPF in makeup is a top up, not a sunscreen. Apply proper sunscreen first, then shade and a hat.
  • Zinc oxide covers a broad UVA to UVB range, titanium dioxide is better at UVB. Neither covers visible light.

Why powder settles into lines

Skin is a landscape of ridges, pores and furrows that changes with age. Silicone replicas from the cheeks of 103 Japanese girls and women aged five to eighty five showed roughness, pore area and furrow depth increasing with age, while ridges decreased (Masuda, 2014).

That cohort started at age five, and no makeup was involved.

Separately, zinc oxide nanoparticles applied to volunteers over five days gathered on the skin surface and within the skin furrows (Mohammed, 2019). That study tested sunscreen, not powder, and did not score line settling.

Deeper furrows plus particles that gather in furrows is a fair explanation, but it is our inference, not a measured result. Nobody has measured mineral makeup settling on older skin.

What the mineral filters do

A review of the two inorganic filters describes zinc oxide as having a broad UVA to UVB absorption curve and titanium dioxide as giving better UVB protection. What concerned those authors was inhalation, hence their advice against nanoparticle spray sunscreens (Schneider, 2019).

Neither covers visible light. A review of visible light photoprotection says that of the sunscreens studied, only tinted sunscreens do (Geisler, 2021). That is about tinted sunscreens, not tinted cosmetics, and several of its authors declare ties to sunscreen makers.

Daily sunscreen and how skin ages

In a randomised trial in Nambour, Queensland, 903 adults under fifty five on daily broad spectrum sunscreen showed no detectable increase in skin ageing over four and a half years, about 24 per cent less change than discretionary use (Hughes, 2013).

Some outcome data were missing, the funder was Australia's National Health and Medical Research Council, and it tested sunscreen, not makeup.

Why the SPF in makeup is not enough

Sun protection factors are measured at 2 mg per square centimetre. When 26 volunteers applied an SPF 50 plus sunscreen to their own faces, the average was 1.04, rising to 1.45 when they followed a written guide (Le, 2023). All of the authors worked for Pierre Fabre Dermo-Cosmetique.

That was liquid sunscreen. We found no equivalent measurement for a buffed mineral powder, so our assumption that powder falls well short is an assumption. Treat makeup SPF as a top up over sunscreen you have already applied.

Sensitive skin and mineral powders

The best direct evidence here is small. Twenty three people with nickel allergy were patch tested for 48 hours against mineral makeup and its pigments. None reacted, including the fifty per cent most sensitive, while 74 per cent reacted to the nickel control (Lodén, 2012).

Real limits though: 23 people, one allergen, a patch test rather than daily wear, and nothing about fragrance or preservatives in other formulas, including ours.

Does any of it get into the skin

Partly. The imaging study found no penetration of intact zinc oxide nanoparticles into the viable epidermis and no cellular toxicity, but zinc ions were released and did penetrate (Mohammed, 2019).

A second study followed the metal. Twenty people used zinc oxide sunscreens outdoors for five days, the zinc enriched in isotope 68 so absorbed zinc could be told from their own. Most was not absorbed, but blood and urine showed small increases, roughly one thousandth of the zinc in the blood compartment (Gulson, 2010).

Levels kept rising after application stopped and looked higher in women using the nano product. The authors do not know whether the zinc crossed as particles or as soluble zinc, and neither study ran past five days or tested a powder.

What to actually do

None of this comes from a trial. It is what we see in the treatment room.

  • Let moisturiser absorb fully before any powder.
  • Use less than feels right, then build. Most settling we see is a volume problem.
  • Press product in with a sponge or fingertips rather than sweeping a brush.
  • Go light around the outer eye and beside the nose. A cream base there, set sparingly, reads smoother.
  • Check your face in daylight, not bathroom light.
  • Apply sunscreen properly first, and use shade and a hat.
  • Try anything new along the jaw first if you react easily.
  • Do not breathe in loose powder, and wash your brushes.

What we are not claiming

Mineral makeup is a cosmetic. It does not treat, heal or prevent anything, and nothing here should be read that way.

None of these studies tested the products we stock, and we sell mineral makeup, so read us with that in mind. We have put no sun protection factor on anything of ours here, and will not without proper test data.
