Heartleaf in Skincare: What Houttuynia Cordata Has Actually Been Tested On

Heartleaf turns up on the front of a lot of Korean skincare, usually with a percentage next to it. It is worth knowing what the plant is, and being straight about how far the evidence goes, because the honest answer is further in a laboratory than on a face.
What it is
Heartleaf is Houttuynia cordata, a low creeping plant that grows across east and southeast Asia. It has a long history in food and traditional medicine, and it has been studied enough that there is real chemistry to talk about rather than folklore.
What ends up in a cosmetic is usually one of two things: an extract or distilled water from the leaves, or the essential oil. They are not the same material and they have not been tested the same way.
What the studies measured
The most directly cosmetic work is in vitro, meaning cells and dishes rather than people. A 2025 study characterised the essential oil and reported growth inhibition of several skin organisms including Cutibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus aureus, measurable antioxidant activity, and a 26.94 per cent increase in fibroblast migration at 400 micrograms per millilitre, with no cytotoxicity observed up to 500 micrograms per millilitre (Sangthong et al., 2025, PMID 41136636).
That is a genuinely interesting result. It is also a dish. Fibroblasts moving across a scratch in a culture plate is not the same event as a person's skin looking different in a mirror, and the study does not claim it is.
The second piece is animal work. Heartleaf polysaccharides reduced epidermal thickening, lesion severity, mast cell infiltration and inflammatory signalling, and restored barrier proteins, in mice with chemically induced atopic dermatitis (Huang et al., 2025, PMID 40393586). Mice are a long way from a bathroom shelf, and atopic dermatitis is a medical condition rather than a cosmetic concern, but it tells you the plant is doing something measurable to inflammatory pathways.
Where quercetin fits
Heartleaf is rich in flavonoids, and quercetin is one of them. Some products name a quercetin derivative on the front of the pack for that reason. A 2026 review sets out the mechanisms flavonoids are understood to work through in cosmetic use, including antioxidant activity, modulation of inflammatory signalling, and effects on barrier function (Guo et al., 2026, PMID 42124935). That is a description of mechanism, not a promise of a result on your face.
What has not been shown
There is no large human trial of a heartleaf cosmetic that we can point you at. The work above is laboratory and animal research, and the gap between those and a controlled study in people is where most ingredient marketing quietly lives. Anyone telling you heartleaf clears skin is going further than the published evidence does.
It is also worth saying that an ingredient near the top of a list is not automatically doing more than one further down. Concentration matters, formulation matters, and how long the product sits on your skin matters. A cleanser is rinsed off in under a minute.
The sensible way to think about it
- Heartleaf is a well characterised plant with real, measured activity in the laboratory.
- The human evidence is not there yet, and honest brands do not pretend otherwise.
- If your skin likes a product with it in, that is a good enough reason to keep using it.
- If a heartleaf product is sold to you as a treatment for a skin condition, be sceptical.
