What the research found
Research in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology showed that skin pigment cells can actually sense blue light, through a light-sensitive protein called opsin-3, and respond by producing pigment (Regazzetti et al., 2018, PMID 28842328). Separately, a review on sun protection describes how visible light can contribute to pigmentation problems such as melasma, and notes that tinted sunscreens containing iron oxides help because they screen visible light, which standard mineral and chemical filters do less well (Kaufman et al., 2020, PMID 32029932).
Who this matters most for
Visible light pigmentation tends to matter most for people with medium to deeper skin tones and for anyone prone to melasma or dark spots. For everyday screen use indoors, the practical effect is likely small compared with sunlight.
A sensible approach
- Use a broad spectrum sunscreen daily, since UV is still the main driver of most sun damage.
- If you are prone to pigmentation, a tinted sunscreen with iron oxides adds visible light protection.
